Tips for Visitors
The first thing that you, as a visitor to Saint George should know is, that you are
very welcome, and that we are delighted that you are here.
Saint George parish was originally founded by Orthodox Christians of Arab descent, so
the service retains Arabic in several places, but is primarily in English. Saturday
evening Great Vespers is a time of subdued reverence that can be quite the refreshing end
to a busy week. Since the liturgical day begins in the evening, Great Vespers is the
first service of Sunday, so it will reflect the theme of that day. Much of the
theological richness of the Orthodox Church is to be found in the prayer services of
Great Vespers and Matins. It has been said that a person could receive a well rounded
theological instruction by attending Great Vespers and Matins for a few years and
listening carefully to the texts.
On a Sunday morning at Saint George, Matins will begin around 9 A.M. (sometimes a
little earlier if the texts are longer). If the place seems sparsely attended don't be
alarmed, by the time Liturgy begins things will have improved.
There as a few basic things that are helpful for person who is visiting an Orthodox
Church for the first. One very popular resource is: 12 Things I Wish I'd Known... by Frederica Mathewes-Green.
We hope that you will enjoy your visit, and that you will come and introduce yourself
at the coffee hour at our parish hall after the service.
